Smoking and Coronary Heart Disease.

By now most people have been informed that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health.  To further demonstrate this; a new study recently published in Lancet shows that smoking cigarettes may be even more dangerous for women than for men.

Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for coronary heart disease.  When compared with men, women have a significant 25% increase in risk for coronary heart disease caused by cigarettes.

The study was done by Dr Rachel R Huxley and  Mark Woodward PhD, who set out to discover if there is a difference in severity of coronary heart disease between the sexes which could be linked to smoking. Their method was to mine data from existing studies they call cohort studies. These cohort studies included 26 articles with data on almost 4 million individuals and 67 thousand coronary events. What this study says to me is:

  • Smoking kills men and women; but it just so happens that women are more likely to get coronary problems than men.

  • Whatever your gender, the answer is to quit smoking–and do it now.  There are many methods to quit and resources are available to help.

One method you may consider is Acupuncture. Acupuncture works to help curb cravings and improve your will power. Herbal medicine can be combined with acupuncture to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

Whatever method you choose it is important that you quit smoking and encourage those your care about to quit smoking too.

Have a Healthy and wonderful day.
